Neural interfaces & decoding

Connect tissue, measurements and models.

Start here.

Neural interfaces connect measurement or stimulation equipment to nervous tissue. A decoding model can associate measured activity with an experimental target. The result depends on the recording method, training data, cooperation and the conditions tested.

A useful analogy—and its limit

A microphone captures a signal; interpretation still needs a model and context. More sensors do not automatically reveal every thought or memory.

What to look for in a paper.

Check whether results apply to new people, new tasks or only the training situation. Distinguish an inferred output from a verbatim readout of a private experience.

The vocabulary.

Decoding
Estimating a target from measured signals using a model.
Electrode
A conductor used to record or deliver electrical signals.
Generalization
How well a result holds outside the data or conditions used to develop it.

  2. How can electrodes follow a three-dimensional tissue surface?
