Cellular recovery

Which functions can return, and at what scale?

Start here.

Cells do not all lose function in the same way or at the same time after circulation stops. Research can test whether selected cellular processes remain recoverable. These studies use defined experimental endpoints and do not demonstrate revival of a person.

A useful analogy—and its limit

Restoring power to some components of a damaged system is different from restoring the entire system’s coordinated operation.

What to look for in a paper.

Separate circulation, metabolism, cell integrity, electrical responses, coordinated brain activity and behaviour. A paper reporting one level must not be described as proving all the others.

The vocabulary.

Ischaemia
Insufficient blood supply to tissue.
Perfusion
Movement of fluid through a tissue’s vessels.
Metabolism
Chemical processes through which cells use and transform materials and energy.

Read in this order.

  1. Can some brain-cell functions be restored after circulation has stopped?
  2. Can selected organ functions recover after a period without circulation?
